I’m Jone Vassbø. I live in Sandnes, and I’m passionate about efficent software development. I currently develop software for fish farming (work) and kindergartens (hobby).
I’m passionat about creating stuff and getting things (ref David Allen) done. I started out as a automatician, wiring stuff from ships to control systems. I quickly moved towards control systems, where i found my passion in software. I made my first software for a customer when i was working for Apply. It was level monitoring and alerting for Halliburton's mud tanks all around Norway. Commisioning involved a traveling and therefore exiting adventures.
The early years of my software development i spent programming PLC, HMI and Scada systems. The systems varied from a lot, here are some examples:
- Ventilation systems (Hospital in Stavanger)
- Lighting rigs to be used on e.g. fotball fields (TLS)
- Water and sewage systems (IVAR)
- Landbased fish farming for testing of feed (Skretting)
- Unit for injecting nitrogen into cement (Halliburton)
- Scada system for controlling asphalt production (Lemminkäinen)
- LNG gas distribution system e.g. Halhjem ferry pier (GasNor)
Programming these systems was a time consuming job, with a lagre degree of repetative work. This made me think of ways to speed up the process, and my focus shifted towards tooling. The tooling made it possible to convert specification from the customer in excel, to nearly runnable code. First of I used VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) in excel, then moved on to C# (.Net). As the tooling evolved, I ended up using more time on the tool than the production code. The auto generated code was fast to create, and the errors during commissioning decreased a lot!
